Vehicles and Equipment

Programs to minimize air pollution from mobile sources.

Mobile Sources are #1 source of local air pollution. Mecklenburg County Air Quality promotes voluntary and incentive-based programs to minimize air pollution from mobile sources like motor vehicles and off-road equipment.

Ways to Improve Air Quality

  • Breathing Room

Breathing Room is a plan to ensure local air quality continues to improve by promoting new fleet electrification and transportation choice initiatives.

  • Charlotte Area Air Awareness

Provides air quality outreach and education to residents, businesses and schools throughout the Charlotte Region.

  • Electric Lawn Equipment

Mowing your lawn for one hour with a gasoline-powered mower generates the same amount of pollution as driving your car for four hours!

  • GRADE (Grants to Replace Aging Diesel Engines)

Grants to Replace Aging Diesel Engines (GRADE) is an air quality improvement program designed to reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx).

  • Heavy Duty Idle Reduction

Unnecessary idling wastes fuel, costs money, and pollutes the air!

  • Smoking Vehicle Program

Report smoking vehicles to improve local air quality, help people with respiratory problems and notify fellow drivers of potential mechanical problems.
